Delete your account

Version: 2026-10-16

In the app

  1. Sign in at app.youshouldnthave.ca.
  2. Open Settings and choose Delete account.
  3. Sign in again when asked, then confirm.

The deletion happens right away. You may want to use Download my data in Settings first.

Without the app

Send a request from the account deletion form on this page, or email contact@youshouldnthave.ca from the email address of your account with the subject “Delete my You Shouldn’t Have account”. We confirm by replying to that address and complete the deletion within 30 days.

What is deleted

  • Your account and sign-in (Google, Apple or email and password); you are signed out everywhere.
  • Your profile (name, email address, language, time zone, country and postal code), notification choices, quiet hours, push subscriptions and consent records.
  • Your calendar feed link and your Google Calendar connection, if any: we delete the events we added to your Google Calendar (where Google still lets us), revoke our access with Google and delete the token.
  • Your wishlists and gift notes in every event, the Secret Santa messages you wrote, and your registry claims (the items become available again).
  • The delivery records of emails and notifications we sent you.
  • Short-lived sign-in and security records tied to your account (attempt counters, connection requests).
  • In events others organize: your name, email address and phone number are removed and you are marked as removed. If a Secret Santa was already drawn, the app repairs the chain and tells only the giver whose match changed.
  • Events you own: they pass to a co-organizer if there is one; otherwise they are deleted for everyone, with their people, wishlists, messages and items.

What is kept, and for how long

  • In events you were part of, a record with no name or contact details, so the event’s counts and history still work.
  • Messages others wrote to you in Secret Santa threads stay with the people who wrote them, until the event is deleted.
  • Organizer audit log entries that involve you (draws, changes and troubleshooting reveals): 2 years after the event date, or 2 years after the event is deleted if it is deleted before its date.
  • If you unsubscribed from an email type or an address bounced: a one-way hash of that address (not the address) and the type, so we never write to it against your wishes.
  • Backup copies of the database: up to 35 days, then deleted.
  • Hosting logs: 30 days.
  • Anything the law requires us to keep.
